Was ist der Unterschied zum ersten Teil?

Ich habe mich diesmal auf das Thema Pornographie beschränkt. Deshalb kommen aus dem ersten Teil vor allem Matt Bradshaw, Kevin Kramer, Cole Tucker und John Garwood auch im neuen Film vor. Während der erste Teil mehr von der Faszination für L.A. erzählt, geht es jetzt mehr an die Basics und das oft sehr nüchterne „unterm Strich“. Und ich konnte erstmals Lebenslinien über mehrere Jahre mitverfolgen und erzählen. Beim ersten Film war es nur eine Spanne von mehreren Monaten. Zudem hat es in dem Bereich viel Veränderung gegeben. Zum Beispiel das Internet, welches so etwas wie das LiveandRaw Hotel möglich machte, aber auch das zunehmende Aufkommen von „Barebacking“.

Wie lange wurde gedreht?

Eigentlich seit 1997, denn auch einiges Material von damals hat auch Eingang in den zweiten Teil gefunden. Ich war immer wieder für mehrere Wochen in Los Angeles und es war wie immer sehr aufwendig, verlässliche Drehtermine zu finden. Denn manche Protagonisten leben von Tag zu Tag, oft von Stunde zu Stunde. Planung ist da kaum möglich. Ausserdem ist es ja nach wie vor ein nicht ganz gesellschaftsfähiger Bereich, bei dem es nicht immer einfach ist, die Protagonisten selbst und ihre Umgebung für die Kamera zu gewinnen. Denn es handelt sich ja hier um einen Film, der nicht nur als DVD für ein gezieltes Publikum sichtbar wird. Deshalb kann ich bei allen Mitwirkenden nur immer wieder für das Vertrauen bedanken, das sie mir geschenkt haben.

Warum der Titel?

Abgesehen von Damian Fords Schlusswort im Film sind es wirklich kleine und schnelle Lebenskreisläufe, „Cycles“. Von mehreren Wochen bis zu mehreren Jahren. Mich hat die Entwicklung interessiert, und am besten kann man sie vielleicht in den Szenen mit den Männern aus SEX/LIFE IN L.A. (Teil 1) und bei den Jungs im Hotel beobachten, wo es oft nur wenige Wochen und Monate sind, bis sie wieder auf der Strasse sitzen.

Warum nur das schwule Pornobusiness?

Weil interessant ist, dass viele es hier für sehr wenig Geld machen. Das mag vielleicht auch ein Unterschied zu weiblichen Darstellern im heterosexuellen Porno sein: man wird wohl nicht so viele Frauen treffen, die Porno nur aus Abenteuerlust oder eigenem Narzissmus tun, was wiederum viele schwule Darsteller antreibt. Das schwule Pornobusiness wird ja gerne etwas glorifiziert: dadurch dass nur Schwule mit Schwulen arbeiten, muss es ja gut sein, denn man kennt sich bestens. Doch am Ende unterscheidet es sich nicht von der Härte des heterosexuellen Business. Wer es nicht selbst zum Produzenten schafft, ist meist in kürzester Zeit wieder draußen. Und für diejenigen die stranden ist die Hilfe auch nicht größer als in anderen Gesellschaftbereichen.

Ist das nicht eine sehr unrepräsentative Welt?

Nein, ich denke es ist ein typisch amerikanischer Mikrokosmos. Mit all seinem Größenwahn und Spießigkeiten. Besonders bei Holden und seinen harten Lebensjahren in reaktionär-christlichen Internaten im Bible-Belt Amerikas. Da gibt es solche „bürgerliche“ Extreme, die ebensolche Extreme wie das „Pornoleben“ hervorbringen. Und vielleicht ist Matt Bradshaws Lebenslauf genau diese Antwort auf die vermuffte Gegend aus der er kam, mit all ihren „moral values“, von denen heute so oft gesprochen wird. Dass er genau in diese Umgebung wieder zurückkehrt ist bemerkenswert. Und dass er beide Schritte so leicht vollziehen konnte, zeigt vielleicht auf absurde Weise, wie ähnlich diese beiden amerikanischen Extreme in ihrem Kern vielleicht sind. Ausserdem sind die Protagonisten auch nicht meilenweit von Männern entfernt, die kein Porno betreiben. Unser gesamtes Leben ist so von Sex- und Pornobildern bestimmt, dass wohl kaum einer sagen kann, es gäbe keine Wechselwirkungen. Auch hierfür ist Los Angeles ein ganz besonderer Ort, denn in keiner zweiten Stadt tummeln sich so viele Schwule, die auch schon mal in einem Porno mitgewirkt haben, oder dies gerne tun würden. Also eine Allgemeingültigkeit.

What is the difference between this movie and the first part?

This time I have focused only on pornography. That is why Matt Bradshaw, Kevin Kramer, Cole Tucker, and John Garwood from my previous movie also appear in this new movie. While the previous movie is more about the fascination with L.A., this one is more about the basics and has a matter-of-fact feel to it. And for the first time, I was able to follow through and tell a story that spans several years. The first movie covered only a few months of time. Remember that a lot of things have changed since the last movie. There is the Internet, for one, which has made something like the LiveandRaw Hotel possible, but also the increasing presence of barebacking.

How long did it take to shoot the movie?

We actually started in 1997, and some of the material from back then also found its way into the second part. I went on numerous trips to Los Angeles, for several weeks each time, and as always it took quite some effort to find reliable shooting dates. After all, some of the characters live from day to day or even from hour to hour. That makes planning difficult. Besides, we are dealing with a subject that is still not exactly mainstream, and it is not always easy to find actors that are comfortable with being filmed in their own environment. After all, this movie is not made as a DVD with a particular audience in mind. That is why I am immensely grateful and cannot thank everybody enough for the trust they have placed in me.

What about the title?

Except for Damian Ford’s closing remarks in the movie, these are actually small and quick life cycles. They last anywhere from several weeks to several years. I was fascinated with the development, and I think you are able to see how the stories unfold especially in the scenes with the men from SEX/LIFE IN L.A. (part 1) and with the guys from the hotel, who are often back on the street just a few weeks or months later.

Why only the gay porn industry?

Because it is interesting that many of these guys do it for very little money. This might also be what makes them different from women in straight porn: You will hardly find women who do porn because of some thrill or because of their own narcissism, as many gay models do. There is often a bit of glorification when it comes to gay porn: There is the notion that because there are only gays working with gays, so it must be good, and they all know each other well. In the end, however, it is not much different from the harsh realities of straight porn. Those that do not become producers themselves usually don’t last long. And those that are left behind can’t really count on much help, just like in other areas of our society.

Isn’t this quite an unrepresentative world?

No, I believe this is a typical American microcosm with all of its megalomania and narrow-mindedness. And it’s particularly obvious with Holden and his tough years in backward Christian boarding schools in America’s Bible belt. That’s where we have such “middle class” opposites that produce something as extreme as “porn life.” And maybe Mat Bradshaw’s life is exactly the answer to the hill-billy place he is coming from, with all of its moral values that are in everybody’s mouth these days. It is remarkable that he returns to exactly that environment. And, in some absurd way, the fact that he was able to take both steps with such ease may show just how similar these two American extremes are at their cores. Furthermore, the characters are not exactly miles apart from men that do not do porn. To a great extent, our entire life is determined by sex and porn images, and nobody can really claim that these two areas don’t affect each other. Los Angeles is a striking example of this phenomenon. There is hardly any other city with so many gays that have played in a porn movie at some point or would at least like to do so. That’s just the way it is.
